Data

Sources & credits

We respect copyright and use data accordingly.
We use diverse sources to avoid exploiting or relying on single sources too much.
We credit our sources and brand owners as much as possible.

For sources of information on art products, visit our brand pages or our individual color pages and see references under "Source".

About literature (online or offline) providing data and information on art materials, pigments, their chemistry, standards, health & safety, etc. see our thematic References - bibliography, sources, links.

"Pigment information" pages are accessible by clicking on pigment codes on our website.

General information on pigments and their chemistry
Most of the general and chemical information on a pigment's page is a reference in itself, being a direct link to its source. Or, if it is technically or otherwise not possible, than captioned for its source. (Some "common knowledge" is not referenced.)

Dry pigment properties
(Particle size, Oil absorption, Density / Specific gravity, Hardness, pH, Heat stability, Chemical resistance, Lightfastness, Weatherfastness)
We collect these data, as available, from actual product data provided by manufacturers. In the case of pigments not that well documented, we try to find industrial sources or examples in literature.

How specific are our dry pigment properties data?

  • Always specific, when coming from our Art material database.
  • Almost always specific, when referencing External links (Online sources) with the only exception being Pigment Density GOLDEN Artist Colors
  • Mostly specific (93%), when referencing Literature (Books, periodicals, papers - Offline sources) 7% being generic names with generalized data.

Our references being

  • 43% with links to our Art material database (this website - Internal links)
  • 40% with URL (External links - online sources)
  • 15% with Bibliography reference (Offline sources)
  • 2% with no reference in Bibliography or online, like product catalogues, brochures, charts (not available as online source or not available any more) but referenced as our source.

Health & safety information for dry pigments

Data is aggregated from multiple sources prioritizing the most stringent hazard statements (as a call for concern if reasonable), our main source being Pubchem. (Their data is aggregated from possible safety hazards reported by manufacturers.) Some manufacturers publish Safety Data Sheets for their pigments on their websites (like Kremer, or Kama Pigments). In these cases we may integrate their hazard statements, when more specific.

We collect data mostly by hand from manufacturer websites and their digital documents published online (estimated 80%). Sometimes more data is available from printed catalogues, brochures, charts etc. by manufacturers or art supply shops. And as our last resort, we collect product data from online webshops, social media contents, and look for information visible on product photos, videos.

Some information comes from contributors who share data on regionally available art products or special editions etc.

We are very careful when collecting, processing, and using data.

However, it should be understood that there is no guarantee for the accuracy of data we publish on our website. It comes from the cumulative possibility of errors whenever data is created and handled. (At any point people, or even machines, are involved.)

Also we can't question or verify the facts behind the data provided, only to decide on and generally accept the credibility of a source.

We correct for obvious typos in data from websites, documents etc. but we can't revise product data published on packaging. We can only comment when something is very probably is a typo or a legacy error.

If you've found an error on our website, or data that you think is not used or credited properly, please write a feedback or contact us!
